FULLERTON, Calif. – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team had an unofficial kickoff to the spring season with a strong showing over the weekend at the CSUF Spring Invitational.
The event was a non-dual match event and the results will not count to the win-loss records of the GCU players, but the team still performed well with six singles wins and four doubles wins. The Lopes faced players from host Cal State Fullerton, as well as San Jose State and UC Irvine.
In singles, sophomore
Santa Strombacha had a 3-0 weekend to lead the way. On the first day, the German transfer defeated CSU Fullerton's Eira Tobrand 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 before taking down Jessica Tsukiji of UC Irvine in straight sets on the second day. Strombacha wrapped up the weekend with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Oleksandra Andrieieva from UC Irvine.
Lopes trio
Fabienne Schmidt,
Sara Rakim and
Autum Prudhomme each picked up singles wins during the three-day event.
The four GCU wins came from two double pairs. Strombacha and Puehse teamed up for a 6-4 win on the first day over a San Jose State duo and dominated CSU Fullerton's Tobrand and Yuseung Suh with a 6-1 victory.
Schmidt and Prudhomme, a pair of GCU fifth-year players, regrouped after an opening 6-3 loss with two straight wins to end the weekend. The Lopes duo took down a Titans pair 6-1 before ending on a 6-2 win over the Anteaters' Emily Fowler and Mia Totah.
The Lopes have two weeks to prepare for their opening dual matches on Feb. 4 and 5 at UC Irvine and UC Riverside, respectively.
