IRVINE, Calif. – The Grand Canyon tennis teams split dual matches at UC Irvine on Friday.
The GCU women started the day with a thrilling, come-from-behind 4-3 win that came down to the final singles match. The men competed in a tough 4-0 loss in the afternoon.
The Lopes women, in their first dual match of the spring, had to come back after dropping the doubles point. GCU's top duo of junior
Natasha Puehse and sophomore
Santa Strombacha won 6-4 but UC Irvine took the 1-0 lead with two 6-3 wins at the bottom two doubles courts.
GCU got on the board with straight-set singles wins by Strombacha at No. 3 at Puehse at No. 1. Meanwhile, UC Irvine regained the lead with two wins at Nos. 5 and 6 before GCU tied the match at 3-3 with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win by graduate
Fabienne Schmidt at Court 2.
It all came down to
Autum Prudhomme at Court 4 for the final singles match. Prudhomme dropped the first set 6-4 but regrouped with a 6-1 second-set win. In the third set, the fifth-year Lope came back from a 5-2 deficit by winning the final five games for a 7-5 third-set victory that clinched the GCU win.
After the women played, the men took the courts against UC Irvine in the afternoon.
The Lopes (0-7) dropped the doubles point with losses at Courts 1 and 3. Graduate
Freddie Grant and sophomore
Loic Van Zeggelaar had their matches left unfinished when trailing 5-4 at No. 2.
In singles, UC Irvine took control with straight-set wins at three courts to clinch the 4-0 win. Sophomore
Jiri Novak lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 while sophomore
Adrien Coulome lost at Court 5. The match was clinched for the Anteaters with a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 3.
Van Zeggelaar nearly won for GCU at the bottom court, holding a 7-6, 5-4 advantage when the match was called. Freshman
Martim Marujo was battling in a second set tiebreaker at Court 4 when his match was left unfinished at 4-6, 6-6.
The women will wrap up the weekend with a match at UC Riverside on Saturday at noon. (Phoenix time).
