The Grand Canyon women's soccer team earned its first WAC weekly award this season with fifth-year defender
Hannah Edwards being named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Edwards, earning the first weekly WAC award of her career, anchored the GCU defensive line last week as the Lopes posted back-to-back shutouts to open the regular season for the first time in program history. GCU won 3-0 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday and 5-0 against Central Arkansas on Sunday while allowing just 12 total shots, including five on goal.
The Aurora, Colorado, native also made GCU history by becoming the program's all-time leader in minutes played with 6,613. She passed the former mark of 6,575, held by Kelsey Smith, in the 37th minute against the Bears on Sunday.
Along with setting the GCU record, Edwards also contributed on the offensive side. She scored on a header in the 31st minute off a corner kick against Central Arkansas. It was one of eight goals the Lopes scored in the first two games.
Edwards and the Lopes will hit the road for the first time this week, traveling to Incarnate Word and UTSA on Friday and Sunday in San Antonio.
