The Grand Canyon men's soccer team shut out San Diego on Tuesday in its first of two exhibition matches to conclude the Lopes' preseason training in Chula Vista, California.
"It felt good to begin competition again," GCU head coach
Leonard Griffin said. "I thought the whole team did a good job coming in fit, has worked hard and we rewarded ourselves with a good result today."
Lopes fifth-year forward
Marco Afonso got the scoring going for the Lopes after finding the upper-right corner of the net off a free kick.
Junior transfer
Shaun-Chris Joash scored his first goal in a GCU uniform toward the end of the first half, giving the Lopes a 2-0 edge.
The Lopes and Toreros went scoreless in the second half, securing the shutout for GCU.
"Right now, we are in a good spot," Griffin said. "But there's a long way to go and a lot to continue to improve."
Up next, GCU plays its final exhibition match at home on Friday at 7 p.m.
