Schimmer named Preseason All-WAC

Conference coaches pick Lopes to finish 3rd in West Division
The Grand Canyon women's soccer team is picked to finish third in the WAC's West Division while Lopes senior midfielder Marleen Schimmer was named to the Preseason All-WAC team, the conference announced on Wednesday.

"I am really happy for Marleen," GCU head coach Chris Cissell said. "She deserves this recognition, and she would be the first one to tell you that she earned this honor because of her teammates and the team-first culture everyone has bought into. The WAC is an extremely competitive conference, and we are blessed to earn the recognition for our soccer family as a whole and for Marleen as an individual player."

Schimmer earns her second straight Preseason All-WAC honor and is coming off an impressive season with GCU in the spring. The Mainz, Germany, native tallied four goals and four assists in WAC play and her 12 points were good for third most on the Lopes. She led the team with 67 shots and finished with a .328 shot percentage.

GCU is coming off a 7-4-1 record in WAC play last season for the most wins since 2014 and the No. 3 seed in the WAC Tournament.
The Lopes earned 17 points in the West Division poll, including a first-place vote for the first time in program history. GCU is slotted behind reigning WAC Tournament champion Utah Valley (24 points) and Seattle U (21 points). California Baptist, New Mexico State and Dixie State round out the division. In the first year of the expanded WAC, the coaches tabbed Stephen F. Austin as the Southwest Division favorite ahead of Abilene Christian.

GCU will kick off the regular season at home against Southeast Louisiana on Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. in GCU Stadium.
