The Grand Canyon women's soccer team added transfer Leah Pirro from San Diego on Tuesday.
Â
"We are very excited to be able to add a great person and player to our soccer family," GCU head coach
Chris Cissell said. "Leah is a very intelligent player that possesses great technical and tactical ability and awareness. She will be a great fit into our culture with her team-first mentality."
Â
Pirro, a 5-foot-5 sophomore midfielder, will join the Lopes this fall and be eligible to play in the upcoming season. The GCU roster now sits at 30 players, with Pirro joining two other transfers, former Torero teammate
Mina Ghazizadeh and
Gianna Gourley from Iowa.
Â
As a freshman in the spring, Pirro earned a All-West Coast honorable mention after appearing in eight of nine San Diego games with seven starts. Pirro recorded five shots with three coming on goal in just over 650 minutes of action. She helped secure a shutout win over Loyola Marymount on Feb. 27 in what was the first of six straight starts for the Simi Valley, California, native.
Â
In her prep career, Pirro was part of a California Interscholastic Federation finalist team and a Tri-Valley League championship for Grace Brethren High School. Pirro also played club with Real So Cal and the Eagles Soccer Club and won the Surf Cup Championship in 2017. In the 2018-19 club season, Pirro scored seven goals in 26 games and finished with a .839 shot percentage.
