EDINBURG, Texas – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team remained perfect in WAC play with a 7-0 shutout of Seattle U on Friday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
In their third shutout in WAC play, the Lopes (8-7, 4-0 WAC) dominated the Redhawks (0-12, 0-4 WAC) by winning all three doubles and six singles matches in straight sets.
In doubles, the Lopes won the point with wins at the top two courts. Sophomore
Natasha Puehse and junior
Jana Weiss started the match on the right foot with a 6-3 win at No. 1. The point was clinched by senior duo
Emilia Occhipinti and
Autum Prudhomme at No. 2 with a 6-3 win. It was their 10th win of the season and eighth win in a row.
Likewise, at No. 3,
Joely Lomas and
Taylor Andersen won their 10th match of the season and eighth win in a row with a 6-4 victory.
The Lopes kept the momentum going with straight-set wins on all six courts, led by Puehse, Occhpinti and Weiss winning on the top three courts for the seventh straight match. Weiss kicked off singles with a 6-1, 6-0 match, followed quickly by Occhipinti with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2. Puehse clinched the dual-match win for the Lopes at No. 1, finishing with a 6-3, 6-2 match.
Leading 4-0, the bottom three courts finished in similar fashion for GCU. Lomas won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4, followed by Prudhomme's fifth win of the season at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-2 scoreline. Andersen wrapped up the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win, improving to 4-0 in WAC play.
The Lopes will enjoy next week off before the final WAC pod of the season against Chicago State and New Mexico State in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on April 17-18.
