Having turned in the best performance of his career, Grand Canyon junior pitcher
Pierson Ohl was named WAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
In a weekend that featured phenomenal Lopes pitching across the board, Ohl did his part in a 4-0 win to open Saturday's doubleheader. The Simi Valley, California, native had a career-high 11 strikeouts while limiting Northern Colorado to two hits over seven innings of scoreless work.
"I knew I had to come out and set the tone especially with this doubleheader going on," Ohl said. "I thought I could make a difference for the team. I came out, got a couple of baserunners early but found a way to get out of it. And then just kept doing my thing from there."
Ohl has earned his share of WAC honors over his GCU career, but this marks the first time that he was named WAC Pitcher of the Week. Ohl was the 2019 WAC Freshman of the Year and has earned multiple preseason all-conference selections.
Zach Barnes was GCU's last pitcher to earn the honor for his opening-day performance against Missouri earlier this season.
Ohl was the first Lopes pitcher to log 11 strikeouts since
Kade Mechals did so against Xavier on March 14, 2019.
"Everything was working pretty well," Ohl said. "I struggled with the change-up early and had to bury some breaking balls at the right time. But the fastball command was really ... I mean I was getting strikes in the bottom of the zone and it's hard to do anything with a pitch down there. Just staying in the bottom of the zone and going from there."
Ohl has taken the ball in the seven-inning game of each WAC doubleheader, and he now has posted complete-game victories in three straight.
Following the outing, Ohl's ERA ticked under 3.00 with a mark of 2.98 that ranks fourth in the WAC.
Ohl was a big part of the GCU pitchers' 26-inning scoreless streak, the longest streak by a Lopes staff since 1974.
The Lopes host Arizona on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before returning to WAC action for a weekend series at New Mexico State.
