STILLWATER, Okla. – The Grand Canyon baseball team lost 3-0 in the second of three games against No. 15 Oklahoma State (9-0) on Saturday.
GCU junior starter
Pierson Ohl threw his third consecutive quality start of the season, going seven innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. The one run that he gave up in the third inning put Oklahoma State up for good and saddled the junior righty with a tough-luck first loss.
Despite the loss, Ohl was in control from the start. He struck out the side in the bottom of the second and retired the final 11 batters he faced. Two of the four hits Ohl allowed were in the third inning when OSU scored, but outside of that inning, Ohl allowed only two singles while no leadoff batter reached base to start an inning.
While the Cowboys (9-0) were struggling to string hits together, the Lopes were struggling to figure out Oklahoma State starter Justin Wrobleski. Facing a left-hander for the second straight game, the Lopes were unable to get any offense going as the transfer from State College of Florida struck out 13 batters and allowed only one hit in seven scoreless innings.
Down 1-0, the Lopes (3-7) attempted to mount a late comeback in the top of the eighth. Junior first baseman
Nick Hansen and senior pinch hitter
Dane Stankiewicz reached on back-to-back walks before senior left fielder Brayden Merrit moved both runners into scoring position with a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt.
With the bases loaded after senior shortstop
Channy Ortiz was intentionally walked, junior second baseman
Juan Colato struck out and freshman third baseman
Jacob Wilson grounded out to shortstop to end the scoring threat and strand three of the seven total runners left on base for the Lopes.
Oklahoma State added insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a pair of runs off three consecutive extra-base hits.
GCU and Oklahoma State will meet in the series finale at O'Brate Stadium at 11 a.m (Phoenix time).
