ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team began the defense of its 2019 WAC regular-season championship with an emphatic 7-0 win over conference newcomer at Dixie State on Friday.
The Lopes (3-7, 1-0 WAC) won all three doubles and all six singles matches, improving to 7-0 all-time in WAC regular-season openers.
In doubles, the Lopes finished in order with point-clinching wins coming from the top two positions. At No. 1, sophomore
Natasha Puehse and junior
Jana Weiss won 6-2 after having their last match sit unfinished with them up 5-4. The point was clinched by seniors
Emilia Occhipinti and
Autum Prudhomme at No. 2 with another 6-2 score for their third win in a row. Likewise at No. 3, freshman
Taylor Andersen and senior
Joely Lomas won their third match in a row with a 6-4 win.
Heading into singles, the Lopes kept the momentum going with straight-set wins on five courts. Puehse put together another dominant performance at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win for her sixth win this season. Weiss followed up with a straight-set win at No. 3 while the dual-match win was clinched at No. 2 with Occhipinti winning 6-1, 6-4.
With the Lopes already leading 4-0, Prudhomme finished her match in straight sets while Lomas added a three-set win at No. 4 that included a 10-point tiebreaker. Andersen was the last to finish at No. 6, prevailing 6-2, 7-6.
The Lopes look to finish the opening weekend of WAC play with a win Saturday against Tarleton in St. George, Utah. The Texans defeated Chicago State 6-1 in their first-ever WAC match.
