ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team capped off the opening weekend of WAC play with a 6-1 win over conference newcomer Tarleton.
The Lopes (4-7, 2-0 WAC) took the doubles point for the third straight match and five of six singles matches to extend their winning streak to three while sitting atop the WAC.
In doubles, the Lopes took the point with wins at the bottom two courts. No. 3 pair
Joely Lomas and
Taylor Andersen kicked off the match with a 6-1 win for their fourth win in a row. The point was clinched at No. 2 as GCU pair
Emilia Occhipinti and
Autum Prudhomme also won their fourth match in a row with a 6-2 win. No. 1 pair
Natasha Puehse and
Jana Weiss lost their match 6-4 to Tarleton's Martha Makantasi and Jemi Aguilar.
GCU kept Tarleton (6-7, 1-1 WAC) on its back foot with first-set wins on five of the six courts. Lomas, at No. 4, dominated her match with a 6-2, 6-1 win while her doubles partner, Andersen, won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6.
With the Lopes on the brink of taking the dual, Weiss won her match 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 to put the Lopes ahead 4-0 and clinch the team win. Puehse added her fourth straight win at No. 1 shortly after with a 6-1, 6-4 straight set win.
Tarleton got on the scoreboard with a three-set win over Prudhomme at No. 5 to wrap up the match. The senior Lope pushed her match to a 10-point tiebreaker with a 6-3 second set win but fell 10-4.
The Lopes have a busy week next week with two midweek matches against Idaho State at home on March 23-24.
