After splitting its opening conference series with fellow preseason favorite UT Rio Grande Valley, Grand Canyon turns its focus to another four-game WAC series. The Lopes welcome in Seattle U to Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark for a series that begins on Friday.

The Lopes look to continue recent success against the Redhawks, having won eight of the last nine matchups. GCU has swept Seattle U in the last two regular-season series.

All four games of the series will be broadcast on GCUTV.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

BROCK'S SHOT: GCU senior Brock Burton has been in the Lopes' plans to be their everyday centerfielder for some time. A suspended 2020 season cut short his first opportunity at the role. But the Phoenix native is taking full advantage this season. Not only does Burton's .357 average pace the club, his mark of 20 hits leads the conference. He has six doubles, putting him among the nation's top 40. Burton is enjoying a nine-game hit streak entering this weekend's series.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Lopes' track record of conference success is well documented, but the results are exemplified further when playing at GCU Ballpark. In a stretch dating back to 2016, the Lopes are 34-10 in home conference games. The success on the home diamond has led the Lopes to posting one of the nation's five best conference records nationally over the last five seasons.
GET ON, GET OVER: If the goal is to get them on, get them over and get them in, GCU has two of the three boxes checked. The Lopes are among the nation's top-50 clubs in walks drawn (77, 36th) and stolen bases (19, 49th). Despite sitting four games under .500 amid one of the nation's 50 toughest schedules, GCU gets on base at a higher rate than its opposition largely because of its patience at the plate.

SCOUTING

Much like the Lopes, Seattle U challenged itself with Power Five nonconference action. The Redhawks enter this weekend having played its last 10 games against Pac-12 teams Oregon, Washington State and Washington. After beginning that stretch with a series win at Oregon, the Redhawks have dropped five of their last six against their in-state Pac-12 competition.

Seattle U's strength lies in its pitching with a staff ERA of 3.87 that checks in at third in the conference. A .218 team average has led the Redhawks to scoring only 49 runs this year which is second-fewest in WAC.

WHAT'S NEXT

In a year when mid-week competition is increasingly rare, the Lopes will host two mid-week games against GCU head coach Andy Stankiewicz's alma mater, Pepperdine. The Tuesday and Wednesday games will wrap a 10-game homestand.
