The Grand Canyon women's tennis team defeated Colorado State 6-1 in a midweek match at the GCU Tennis Facility.
The Lopes (2-7) took the doubles point and five singles matches in one of the most complete team performances this season.
In doubles the Lopes took the point with wins at the bottom two courts. Senior duo
Autum Prudhomme and
Emilia Occhipinti at No. 2 started the match off with a 6-4 win. At No. 3
Joely Lomas and
Taylor Andersen were up early 3-1 but dropped four games to put themselves in a 3-5 hole. The GCU pair held off two match points from Colorado State and won the final four games of the match winning 7-5 and clinching the point for GCU. At No. 1,
Natasha Puehse and
Jana Weiss had their match abandoned with the Lopes up 5-4 and serving for match point up 40-30 in their game.
In singles the Lopes kept the momentum going with first set wins on five of the six courts. Puehse at No. 1 and Occhipinti at No. 2 dominated their matches with Puehse winning 6-1, 6-0 and Occhipinti winning 6-1, 6-4. Those two quick wins gave the Lopes a 3-0 advantage.
Colorado State (1-3) would bounce back with a win at No. 4 but it was short lived as Andersen clinched the match at No. 6 moments later with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
Prudhomme and Weiss would both add wins after Lopes had clinched the team victory both prevailing in a 10-point tiebreaker in their third sets.
The Lopes will kick off conference play this weekend traveling to St. George, Utah for matches against Dixie State and Tarleton on March 19 and 20.
