Fresh off the first road trip of the season, the Grand Canyon baseball team will kick off a 10-game homestand and the start of WAC play with four games against UT Rio Grande Valley.

The four-games series at GCU Ballpark will feature two of the top three teams in the WAC preseason coaches poll. The Lopes were picked to alongside UTRGV and Sacramento State in a three-way tie for the top spot in the poll.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

FIRST-SERIES SUCCESS: The Lopes have won two of their last three WAC-opening series. At GCU Ballpark, the Lopes hold a 6-3 advantage over the Vaqueros since 2014.
TRAVEL CURFEW: In the Sunday series finale against Oklahoma State, the Lopes had the game end in a tie due to a travel curfew. It was the first tie for the Lopes since 2016 when weather stopped an extra-inning game at Kansas tied 5-5.
BURTON BASH: In the three games against the Cowboys last weekend, senior center fielder Brock Burton recorded five hits including four doubles. He hit a pair of two baggers in the first game and then followed up with a double in each of the next two games.

SCOUTING

UTRGV has been on a roll with five straight wins entering conference play. The Vaqueros took two of three games from Baylor to start the year and bounced back from losing three of four games to Washington in the following series with a sweep of Northern Illinois last week. The four games against NIU were only seven-inning games, and UTRGV won the final two games by one run each.

The Vaqueros have been strong at the plate this season, sitting in second in the WAC with a .278 batting average and .406 slugging percentage. UTRGV is also tied with Tarleton with 23 doubles and three triples hit.

WHAT'S NEXT

GCU will continue the WAC homestand with a four-game set against Seattle U from March 19-21.
