The Grand Canyon cross country teams will travel to Seattle to compete at Jefferson Park Golf Course in the WAC Championships on Saturday. The WAC Championships usually occur in November, but because of COVID-19, the Lopes will end their cross country season in late February for the first time.Â
The men will run an 8-kilometer race and the women will run 6 kilometers.Â
"I am looking forward to the races this weekend," GCU head coach
Sara Slattery said. "We had a very good start to our season at the Silver State Collegiate meet a few weeks ago. It is an interesting year and hard to predict who each team will bring to the starting line on Saturday. We are very grateful for this season and the opportunity to compete. Our group is hungry and excited to race. They have gotten stronger each week."
At the previous WAC Championships in 2019, the women finished third overall while the men took fifth. The Lopes look to improve upon the outcomes of last season because of new additions to the team and the hard work from the extended offseason.Â
The Lopes will travel with a small team of six women and nine men becasue of COVID-19 protocols. Some of the student-athletes traveling include redshirt sophomore
Jacob Lewis, redshirt freshman
Joseph Skoog, freshman
Hana Hall,
Cannon Angotti, and
Luke Wentz, and juniors
Blake Bennett and
Ana Alvarez Tostado.Â
Coming off a personal-best and third-place finish at the Silver State Collegiate, Skoog is expected to be a top performer to aid the Lopes' team score. Skoog earned WAC Male Runner of the Week following his strong performance.Â
Additionally at the Silver State Collegiate meet, the men's team beat Utah Valley's competitive team for the first time in program history. The Lopes will see this team again as they race on Saturday.
