The Grand Canyon women's soccer team capped off a historic week with senior forward
Marleen Schimmer being named WAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Â
The Mainz, Germany, native led the Lopes with two goals and four assists in wins against Dixie State and Utah Valley, as the Lopes won their first WAC title by clinching the WAC West Division championship.
Â
On Thursday against Dixie State, Schimmer assisted on GCU's first two goals as part of a 4-1 win. On Saturday against Utah Valley, Schimmer took control and finsihed with two goals and two assists.
Â
In the 24th minute, Schimmer took a pass from fellow forward
Gianna Gourley and finished a contested shot in the middle of the penalty box. Just four minutes later, Schimmer scored again and took on four Utah Valley defenders before converting her shot from 20 yards out.
Â
Later, Schimmer picked up two more assists on goals by Gourley and redshirt junior
Dani Babb in the 35th and 49th minutes.
Â
With her performance last week, Schimmer wraps up the regular season with GCU Division I-era single-season records for goals (12), assists (14) and points (38). Those marks also each lead the WAC and she ranks third in the nation for assists and 18th for goals.
Â
Schimmer and the top-seeded Lopes turn their attention to the WAC Tournament, where they will face the winner of No. 2 seed Lamar vs. No. 3 seed New Mexico State on Friday in Abilene, Texas. All matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.
