Puehse, Rudnicki deliver strong performances

Both Grand Canyon tennis teams were in action for the first time this fall with the men competing at the Arizona Invitational while the women were at the SDSU Fall Classic over the weekend.

In Tucson, the men won five singles matches with newcomer Grzegorz Rudnicki picking up two wins. The Ottawa (Ariz.) transfer defeated Mesa Community College opponent Andrew Hoffman easily 6-0, 6-0 and then took cared of Northern Arizona's Mikael Purne 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles fifth year returner Freddie Grant and sophomore Jiri Novak defeated a NAU pair 6-4 for the lone GCU doubles win over the three-day event.

Meanwhile in San Diego, the women began their fall season with a strong showing in the three-day event hosted by San Diego State.

Sophomore Natasha Puehse took third place in the top singles flight while picking up wins over SDSU opponents Julia Jordan 6-1, 6-2 and Alicia Melosch in the third place match 7-6, 7-5. Meanwhile in the fifth flight sophomore Taylor Andersen made a run to the championship match after two wins over Andreea Ciornei from Long Beach State 7-5, 6-1 and Eve Daniels from UTEP 6-4, 6-4.

Fifth year returner Autum Prudhomme and newcomers Santa Strombacha and Valentina Del Marco each picked up a singles win in their respective flights.

In doubles Puehse again had a strong showing taking third place in the top flight with partner Strombacha. The GCU pair defeated a Long Beach State duo 6-3 in the first round and ended the weekend with a 6-3 win over a pair from San Jose State.

Prudhomme and Del Marco competed alongside Andersen and Aline Buhr in the second doubles flight.

The men will be in action next weekend at the San Diego State Invitational while the women will compete in the ITA Southwest Regional from Oct. 21-25.
