GCU defeats Utah Valley 1-0, earns back-to-back conference titles
OREM, Utah — The No. 25 Grand Canyon men's soccer team clineched the WAC regular-season title Saturday for the second consecutive season with a 1-0 win at Utah Valley.
The Lopes improved to 14-2-0 overall and 9-1-0 in WAC action, following the shutout over the Wolverines.
"This was a great result to cap off a very tough weekend," GCU head coach Leonard Griffin said. "UVU is a very strong attacking team so to get the shutout is massive."
Utah Valley outshot the Lopes 13-5, but GCU senior goalkeeper Anthony Munoz had the best performance of his career with eight saves, securing his third shutout of the season.
The match remained scoreless through the first half, then the Lopes' junior striker Shaun-Chris Joash netted the lone goal, which was a rocket off the left foot into the upper left side of the goal in the 61st minute on the assist from fifth-year midfielder Tosh Yasuda. Joash now ranks second on the team and is tied for fifth in the WAC with seven goals.
"This game puts us closer to where we want to be but we know we still have work to do," Griffin said.61'| JOASH WITH THE ABSOLUTE LASER 👏 Lopes lead 1-0!
