The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team begins its 2021 season against newly entered WAC opponent Tarleton. GCU and Tarleton will play back-to-back matches on Monday at 7 p.m. and Tuesday at 3 p.m.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- WAC play: The Lopes did not compete in any nonconference matches and will only compete against WAC opponents this season. GCU has not played a match since Nov. 23, 2019, when it was in the WAC Tournament championship match.
- New opponent: GCU and Tarleton, in its first year of Division I transition, have never squared off.
- Seniority returns: The Lopes welcome back nine players from their 2019 roster. Junior middle blocker Kaira Moss returns for her junior season after posting 1.12 blocks per set and earning a spot on the All-WAC first team and the Preseason All-WAC team. Setter Klaire Mitchell returns for her sophomore campaign after a historic freshman season.
SCOUTING
Tarleton comes into this week's action with two matches under its belt. The Texans took on Louisiana Tech and Stephen F. Austin on Friday. The Texans swept the Bulldogs in their opening match and then fell to the Jacks 3-1.
Amber Strange totaled a team-high 31 kills in the two matches for Tarleton. Setters Kayla Brannon and Melina Maldonado combined for 74 assists on the day.
WHAT'S NEXT
- The Lopes stay home for another WAC newcomer, Dixie State, on Feb. 8-9.
