STANFORD, Calif. – The Grand Canyon baseball team fell in a close 3-2 game to Stanford on Saturday at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.
The Lopes mounted a late comeback and threatened to tie the game in the ninth. Down by one with two runners on base, Stanford was able to get a strikeout on the black to end the game.
While the Lopes (6-4) tallied their most hits in a game this year with 12, they also left 12 men on base and were 3 for 10 with runners in scoring position.
Junior utility man
Juan Colato became just the seventh Lope since the return to Division I to go 5 for 5 in game, a line that included four singles and a double.
Cuba Bess most recently accomplished the feat last season at Sacramento State on May 17.
The Lopes got up early on Stanford in the top of the first with Colato's infield single that scored leadoff man
Channy Ortiz. That would be the only scoring for GCU until the ninth inning when
Drew Smith hit an RBI single to left field that narrowed the Stanford lead to 3-2.
In between the first and ninth innings, the Lopes left runners on base in six straight innings including runners on first and third in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Starter
Pierson Ohl was handed his second tough-luck loss of the season. The right-hander tossed seven innings while giving up six hits and two runs — only one earned — with five strikeouts.
On a 2-2 count in the bottom of the seventh, Ohl had one mistake pitch that led to Stanford left fielder Brock Jones' solo homerun that broke the 1-1 tie. An RBI double by Jones in the eighth inning off GCU reliever
Cal Lambert extended the Cardinal lead to 3-1.
Ortiz and Smith enjoyed multi-hit games while outfielder
Ty Siffermann made his first career start.
The Lopes and Cardinal will meet in the rubber match of the three-game series tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (Phoenix time).
