The Grand Canyon women's soccer team announced the Friday signing of midfielder/forward Marleen Schimmer, one of the most highly touted players in program history.
Â
Schimmer joins the Lopes for the 2020 season after two standout seasons at Arizona State and experience on German youth national teams, including the 2017 U-17 UEFA champions.
"We are excited for this wonderful opportunity to recruit Marleen Schimmer into our awesome Grand Canyon women's soccer family," head coach
Chris Cissell said.
The Mainz, Germany, native has made six appearances for the German youth national team and scored her first career international goal against Poland.
Â
Schimmer played two seasons at Arizona State, where she amassed 11 career goals in 35 matches. In 2019, she ranked second on the team for goals (six), assists (four) and points (16) while leading the team in shots (68) to be honored on the All-Pac-12Â third team.
Â
As a freshman, Schimmer made an immediate impact with her first career goal in just her fifth collegiate match and scored two goals, including a game-winning score in overtime at Oregon. Overall, she made 13 starts and scored five goals with one assist. Her 11 points ranked second on ASU in 2018.
Â
Along with international and college soccer experience, Schimmer also has made 35 appearances with 16 goals for TSV Schott Mainz, a soccer club in the second tier of the Bundesliga in Germany.                                                           Â
