Grand Canyon track and field school records fell left and right this weekend during split-squad meets in Houston and Flagstaff, Arizona. Sophomore distance runner
Jacob Lewis, sophomore thrower
Moataz Hassan and sophomore distance runner
Blake Bennett all broke GCU records.
"We started off Day 1 with a bang in Houston with a school record in the men's mile by
Jacob Lewis," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood. "True freshman
Rylan Stubbs also had a good race (4 minutes, 14.53 seconds), and those two now rank No. 1 and No. 2 in the WAC."
Lewis clocked in at 4:11.35 in the men's mile at the Houston G5 and Super 22 Invitational to break
Daniel Flores' 2018 record of 4:12.34. Also in Houston, Bennett broke the school record in the men's 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:29.47. Hassan capped off the Lopes record-setting with a shot put throw marked at 16.51 meters at the Mountain T's Invited in Flagstaff, where he surpassed teammate
Jorden Okyere's record from this year's Albuquerque meet (15.97 meters).
"All five of our men's shot putters had personal bests, and their performances now rank Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 in the WAC," Flood said. "Day 2 in Houston was led off by a couple of gutty performances in the multi-events by both
Niki Xydona and
Grant Carpenter. Both had WAC-leading performances in the pentathlon and heptathlon, respectively."
The Lopes took over some leading spots in the WAC. Senior
Symone Wright-Flowers leads the WAC in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.87 seconds and ranks second in the WAC for long jump (5.74 meters). GCU senior distance runners
Paige Hildebrandt and
Elizabeth Balsan clocked in under the 10-minute mark in the women's 3,000 meters, which placed them first and second in the WAC.
"
Paige Hildebrandt also just missed breaking her own school record in the women's mile, but her wonderful time of 4:57.07 is the fastest in the WAC this year," Flood said.
The Lopes return to Albuquerque next weekend for the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
