The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team came up short to CSUN on Friday night inside Antelope Gymnasium, as the Lopes fell in straight sets, 26-24, 25-22 and 25-23 despite three close games with the Matadors.
GCU (8-2) suffered its first loss following a five-game win streak, as the Lopes only other setback of 2019 came in a five-set battle on Sept. 6 to Ball State.
"Our offense was incredibly stagnant tonight," head coach
Tim Nollan said. "Northridge was able to defend well and we had an extremely difficult time getting in rhythm.
"We didn't put any service pressure on them and we couldn't generate any points on offense. We'll have to come back tomorrow with a much better effort."
CSUN (4-6) struggled from the service line with 17 service errors on the game, but the Matadors out-hit the Lopes with a .220 hitting percentage compared the GCU's .072.
Sophomore
Annabelle Kubinski paced the Lopes offense, as the middle blocker had nine kills on the night. Fellow middle blocker and sophomore
Kaira Moss added seven, while senior outside hitter
Melody Horton had six.
In just her second appearance this season, freshman middle blocker
Kailey Trapp tallied five kills and a hitting percentage of .714 (5-0-7) in just two sets of work.
GCU found its first lead of 11-10 in the first set, but CSUN battled back to lead by three, 21-18. The Lopes tied the game, 24-24, but CSUN pulled out the win in set one in extra points, 26-24.
With its largest lead of the night, GCU went up by as many as six, 17-11, before CSUN came back with a 14-6 run to claim set two.
Trailing the Matadors in the third and final set, a block assist from freshman setter
Klaire Mitchell and Trapp tied the game, 17-17, before a Horton service ace gave GCU the lead, 18-17.
The Lopes let the set get away from them, as CSUN came back to claim the sweep with a 25-23 third-set win.
GCU returns tomorrow to face Idaho at Noon and Omaha in the tournament finale at 7 p.m. Saturday night's game will be played inside GCU Arena.
