Larson scores 1st goal of season

BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Grand Canyon women's soccer team fell 7-1 to Florida Atlantic on Sunday, wrapping up the opening road trip of the regular season.

GCU forward Camryn Larson scored her first goal of the season in the 59th minute. The junior, who is the Lopes' top returning scorer, was blocked on her first attempt but stayed with the play and bent the ball past the keeper on the second effort.

The Lopes' subs provided a spark in both halves. Freshman Haley Bostard played her first action of the season and hit a header off a corner kick, but sailed it over the crossbar. Raeanne Jones nearly tied the game in the 40th minute with a shot from outside the box that banged off the crossbar, inches from finding the back of the net. She came back into the game in the second half and played a total of 38 minutes. Freshman Ellie Busik came off the bench with a pair of shots and one on goal.

Florida Atlantic controlled the ball for most of the first half, with senior Mary O'Hara scoring the game's first goal from outside the box in the 26th minute.

The Owls came out strong in the second half, scoring three goals in less than 10 minutes after a second yellow card by GCU's Mikaela McGeen left the Lopes with 10 players for the final 30 minutes of play. All three goals came off crosses into the penalty box that took deflections to a waiting FAU player. FAU's Miracle Porter completed a hat trick in the 79th minute.

The Lopes will be back in action Thursday at 7 p.m. for the home opener against UTEP. The last time the Miners played in Phoenix was in the inaugural game of GCU Stadium in 2016.
