Mechals was selected in the 40th round by the Miami Marlins but elected to return. The first team All-WAC starting pitcher and All-West Region honoree made a name for himself as a junior with the Lopes. The McMinnville, Ore., native quickly and aptly took on the role of staff ace, going 11-1 with a shiny 2.16 ERA. He was the nation's co-leader in victories prior to the start of the NCAA tournament while leading the WAC in opponent batting average (.193) and ranking second in strikeouts (100) and ERA.
McCarville was picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 30th round of the draft after his sophomore season at Glendale Community College. The 6-foot-4 right-hander tossed 162 2/3 innings in his two seasons at the junior college level, compiling a 2.55 ERA with 134 strikeouts. The Sandra Day O'Connor High School alumnus is spending this summer in the Cape Cod League with the Orleans Firebirds.
Murphy went in the 31st round to the Philadelphia Phillies. The 6-4 left-handed pitcher was one of eight Arizona high school seniors to be drafted this year. In his senior season at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Murphy helped lead his team to the 6A state title. He went 9-0 with a 0.60 ERA in leading the Huskies to a 27-7 record.
Bell was a 34th-round selection of the Arizona Diamondbacks,
who makes that pick annually in honor of Cory Hahn. A right-hander from Seton Catholic High School in Chandler, Bell went 10-2 with a 2.80 ERA as a senior and compiled 179 innings of work in four varsity seasons. Coming from a baseball family, Bell will join the program as a freshman in the fall.
With the return of Mechals, GCU is set to return approximately 480 of its 534 innings pitched from the 2019 team that set a program Division I record for wins (36).
Mechals and McCarville each will be eligible for the 2020 draft, while Murphy and Bell will become draft-eligible in 2022.
