The Grand Canyon track and field season may be over for 2019, but a pair of Lopes will represent their countries this summer at international championships.
GCU senior
Jesse Newman will compete for the U.S. in the javelin at the North American-Central American-Caribbean U-23 Championships in Queretaro, Mexico, on Sunday, while junior teammate
Dora Filipovic will represent Croatia in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter race at the European U-23 Championships in Gavle, Sweden, on July 11-14.
Newman, a 2018 second-team All-American honoree, won his second consecutive WAC javelin title in May after throwing 14 feet farther than the runner-up.
Filipovic, coming off a breakout season for the Lopes, won her first conference title in the 200 at the WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Orem, Utah, in May and ran a personal-best time of 24.05 seconds in a preliminary 200. Filipovic also set a personal record in the 400 during preliminaries, running a time of 54.05 to reach the finals. Women's qualifying marks for the 200 and 400 were 24.45 and 55.00, respectively.
The NACAC U-23 Championships traditionally occurred every two years, but was moved from 2018 to 2019. This is Mexico's second time hosting the event, which was last in the U.S. in 2010 in Florida.
The European U-23 Championships also are held every two years on odd-numbered years and changes host nations. Finland and Sweden are the only nations to host the event more than once.
