Grand Canyon junior pitcher
Kade Mechals was selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings West All-Region second team on Wednesday.
Mechals becomes the ninth GCU player to earn all-region honors at the Division I level. Recent Lopes selections include
Quin Cotton (2018) and
Garrison Schwartz (2017).
The West All-Region team is composed of players representing schools in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
Mechals arrived on the GCU campus last fall, quickly and aptly taking on the role of staff ace. Going 11-1 with a shiny 2.16 ERA, Mechals was the nation's co-leader in victories prior to the start of the NCAA tournament.
The right-hander led the WAC in opponent batting average (.193) and was second in strikeouts (100) and ERA.
He was the first GCU pitcher to earn All-WAC first-team honors since 2014 and tied the program's Division I mark for wins and set the program's Division I ERA mark.
In last week's MLB Draft, Mechals was a 40th-round choice of the Miami Marlins, representing the fifth GCU player to be selected in this year's draft.
Mechals was one of five players from Arizona schools to be selected to the all-region teams, joining Arizona's Nick Quintana and Arizona State's Spencer Torkelson, Hunter Bishop and Trevor Hauver.
