OREM, Utah – Four individual titles, two school records and strong preliminary race performances highlighted Grand Canyon's Day 2 of the WAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Lopes' multi-event crew continued its stretch of dominance with two titles and a school record.
GCU junior
Grant Carpenter defended his crown to become a three-time WAC decathlon champion. Carpenter won every throwing event (shot put, discus and javelin) and supported his strong throws with the pole vault.
After breaking the school record in the javelin on Thursday, junior
Niki Xydona broke the heptathlon record for the second time in 2019 with 5,054 points and won three of the seven events.
Sophomore
Alyson Schwartz defended her outdoor title in the pole vault with a massive school record jump of 4.14 meters. Schwartz has won three straight pole vault titles after winning the title indoors in February. The sophomore ranks 29th in the West qualifying list and 45th in the nation with the school record.
In the men's long jump, senior
Adrian King jumped GCU's second-best wind-legal mark ever with a 7.72-meter leap. King was seeded third entering the competition and left atop the podium at the end of the day. The senior is now tied for 32nd in the country and 14th in the West.
The Lopes received scoring from each of their three male and three female throwers in the shot put. Senior
Courtney Logan led the GCU women with a third-place finish on a personal record 14.57-meter throw. Freshman
Moataz Hassan finished fourth among WAC men with a 15.88-meter throw.
In the women's pole vault, the Lopes went 1-2-3 to cap Schwartz's school record. Sophomore
Madelyn Lundberg jumped 3.93 meters and freshman
Morgan Adsit jumped 3.63 meters.
The Lopes went 2-4-6-8 in the women's long jump and 1-3-4-7 in the men's long jump.
At the conclusion of Friday's events, the women lead with 96 points and the men sit seven points behind host Utah Valley's 71 points.
