Grand Canyon won its 10th consecutive conference game with an 11-1 defeat of Northern Colorado in eight innings on Friday night at GCU Ballpark.
Senior third baseman
Tyler Wyatt and junior right fielder
Quin Cotton paced the Lopes (29-20, 15-7 WAC) with three hits apiece, leading a GCU lineup that featured four multi-hit efforts and 14 combined hits.
GCU quickly went to work with a five-run second inning fueled by six hits and a Wyatt home run.
"It's always good to score some runs early in the ballgame," Lopes head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "You get the feeling that you can exhale a little bit."
Wyatt went opposite field on the first pitch he saw, hitting his fifth home run of the season and third in the last six games.
"He's been working hard, working to stay up the middle of the diamond," Stankiewicz said. "It doesn't mean he's not going to pull the ball when it's meant to be pulled, but the big one was the opposite field home run. He's got that kind of strength. He stayed inside it and got some good backspin to right field. I think it's good for his personal development knowing he's got some power to right-center. That to me was a huge at bat for him in his development. He can do damage to that off side. He's been swinging the bat well and he's been a tough-luck guy. Good for him to get some base knocks today."
While Wyatt's hit got the offense moving, the most productive hit came off the bat of senior second baseman
Austin Bull. Adding to a string of four consecutive hits, Bull cleared the bases on a double to right-center field to put GCU in front 5-0.
GCU freshman pitcher
Pierson Ohl picked up his sixth victory of the season with a six-inning, one-run outing. Ohl's biggest hurdle was a fourth inning that saw the first three Bears reach base.
"Pierson did a great job of getting out of that jam," Stankiewicz said. "You've got bases loaded, no outs and for them to get a one there, that's a big momentum shift. We were kind of on the ropes there. He figured out a way to get the big punch out and then the line-drive double play. We'll take it. That's a part of his maturity to get out of some of those jams. I thought he did a nice job of pounding the zone and we played a little bit of defense behind him."
Ohl combined with sophomore
Frankie Scalzo to hold Northern Colorado scoreless through the final four frames.
The GCU defense pitched in as well using a few key backhand stops and a double play to limit the damage.
"All those plays are leadoff outs of innings," Stankiewicz said. "And when you get a leadoff out of an inning, now you've only got two outs to work with the rest of the way. It was a nice job of our defense."
After the five-run second inning, the Lopes posted two-run tallies in the third, fifth and eighth.
Junior left fielder
Kona Quiggle opened the third inning with a solo home run, his 10th of the season. An RBI groundout by senior center fielder
Preston Pavlica capped off the scoring and gave GCU a 7-0 lead.
Pavlica teamed with sophomore catcher
David Avitia for doubles that each scored runs.
GCU finished off the victory with a pair of runs to enact the 10-run rule. A bases-loaded walk by Wyatt scored the first run of the frame, while a wild pitch scored the 11th run to end the game.
The Lopes and Bears will meet for Game 2 on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
