Lopes and Aggies to play Sunday rubber match
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Grand Canyon jumped out to a 4-0 lead before New Mexico State scored nine unanswered runs to even the series with a 9-4 Saturday afternoon victory.
The Lopes (17-13, 5-3 WAC) scored two runs in the second and two runs in the third to take the early lead.
To open the second, sophomore first baseman Cuba Bess hit his second home run of the series and took the team lead with his eighth of the season. Senior center fielder Preston Pavlica doubled to keep the momentum going and eventually scored the Lopes second run on an RBI fielder's choice from sophomore catcher David Avitia.
The Lopes tacked on two more in the third. Junior designated hitter Quin Cotton singled to begin the frame before scoring on junior right fielder Kona Quiggle's double. Quiggle scored GCU's fourth run when Pavlica hit a sacrifice fly.
GCU's 4-0 edge was quickly trimmed to 4-3 after a three-run homer in the third. New Mexico State (21-8, 5-3 WAC) scored three more in the fifth to jump out to a 6-4 lead and would not look back.
After picking up five hits in the first third of the game, the Lopes were held without a hit in the final six innings.
GCU freshman pitcher Pierson Ohl exited after four innings with the Lopes leading 4-3. But Ohl was handed the no decision after New Mexico State got to the Lopes' bullpen.
For the second straight season, GCU and New Mexico State will meet in a Sunday rubber match. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. (Phoenix time).
