LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Grand Canyon baseball team once again held a lead but fell late to New Mexico State 9-2 on Sunday afternoon.
The game was tied as late as the seventh and within a single run in the eighth, but the Aggies pulled away late.
GCU picked up a pair of runs on a clutch two-out base hit from senior center fielder
Preston Pavlica in the fourth. Sophomore first baseman
Cuba Bess drew a walk before senior third baseman
Tyler Wyatt was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a groundout before Pavlica hit a sharp single through the left side, just beyond the reach of the Aggies shorstop.
New Mexico State quickly responded with two of its own in the fourth. Three straight hits to lead off the frame resulted in the two runs before sophomore pitcher
Coen Wynne did damage control in relief to keep the score tied.
The teams traded zeros until New Mexico State broke the stalemate with a run in the seventh. A two-out single allowed a leadoff double to come into score and give the Aggies a 3-2 lead.
The wheels fell off for the Lopes in the eighth when New Mexico State broke the game open with seven runs. GCU nearly got out of a bases-loaded jam with no damage, but a bases-loaded walk made it 4-2 New Mexico State before the floodgates opened.
GCU's offense was held to three hits on the afternoon.
Pavlica had the Lopes' only multi-hit effort and only two RBIs of the game.
The Lopes return to Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark for seven of the next eight games. The home-heavy stretch opens with in-state foe Arizona on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
