CHICAGO — The Grand Canyon women's tennis team clinched its second WAC regular season title in the past three seasons on Friday.
A 6-1 win over the Cougars coupled with a 5-2 UT Rio Grande Valley loss to Kansas City gave the Lopes the title regardless of the result tomorrow against the Vaqueros.
"It was definitely great to stay undefeated in the WAC and clinch the regular season title," head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "We had a bunch of young players last year, four freshmen that were spending a lot of time in the lineup. We had a lot of belief and faith in them that they were the right players. We kept working hard last year and almost turned things around in the WAC Tournament, but we got to see all that hard work pay off by clinching the regular season title tonight."
Now sophomores, three of those four freshmen from last year picked up wins against the Cougars.
Autum Prudhomme won in doubles at No. 3 with
Celia Morel and picked up a singles wins at No. 6.
Martina Lo Pumo and
Ludovica Infantino each stayed perfect in WAC play in singles winning at Nos. 4 and 5.
Fueled by another strong performance in doubles and winning the point for the fourth straight match, the Lopes took the first three matches to get to four points. After the first two wins from Lo Pumo and Infantino,
Celina Buhr clinched the team win with a 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 win at No. 3.
Chicago State picked up a win at No. 2, but the Lopes closed out the match on a high note with wins by
Emilia Occhipinti and Prudhomme at Nos. 1 and 6 singles.
