CHICAGO — The Grand Canyon women's tennis team dropped its first WAC match of the season, a 4-3 loss to UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday.
Despite the loss the Lopes (9-8, 4-1) still locked up the No. 1 overall seed and a first-round bye in the WAC Tournament in two weeks.
The Lopes took the doubles point, winning the final two matches after losing at No. 1.
Martina Lo Pumo and
Ludovica Infantino won at No. 2, while
Celia Morel and
Autum Prudhomme improved to 5-0 in WAC play with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Morel and Prudhomme become the first Lopes' pair to go 5-0 in WAC play since
Alexandra Petrzalkova and
Kylie Waschuk went 5-0 in 2016.
UTRGV (6-11, 3-2) responded quickly and took a 2-1 lead with wins at No. 1 and 6 to start singles play. But the Lopes would answer right back with back-to-back wins at Nos. 2 and 3 in straight sets by
Celina Buhr and Morel.
With a 3-2 advantage and two singles matches to play, the Lopes needed to win one of the final two matches to take the win. Infantino forced her match to a third set after dropping the first but lost 6-4 to tie the score up at 3-3. Lo Pumo's match also went three sets, but she lost 7-5 in the final frame as UTRGV completed the comeback, winning 4-3.
The Lopes now have two weeks off before the WAC Tournament begins in Edinburg, Texas at UTRGV from April 26-28. As the No. 1 seed, the Lopes will play the winner of the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds.
