BROWNSVILLE, Texas — The Grand Canyon men's tennis team advanced to the WAC championship match with a 4-0 shutout over Chicago State on Saturday. The Lopes (18-6) took the doubles point and jumped out early in singles to win in a WAC Tournament semifinal sweep.
In doubles, sophomore
Freddie Grant and senior
Lucas Grego won for GCU by default since the Cougars (7-19) didn't field a third team. With one match already in hand, junior
Valentin Lang and freshman
Jakub Novak took the point at No. 2, winning 6-2. Junior
Lorenzo Fucile and senior
Mathieu Rajaonah's match was left unfinished at 5-5 at the top position.
In singles, GCU extended their lead with a win by default from Novak at No. 6. Grant would win shortly after at No. 5 with 6-0, 6-4 set scores. Grego recorded his 20th win of the season at No. 4, a GCU single-season record, and clinched the team win with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Fucile, Rajaonah and Lang's matches were unfinished at the top three singles positions.
GCU advances to the WAC championship match for the first time in school history. The Lopes will face No 2 seed New Mexico State, which won 4-1 over Kansas City in its semifinal match. GCU won the teams' previous two meetings this season. The match will start at 11 a.m. (Phoenix time).
