The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up the 2019 home schedule with a 5-0 shutout of Delaware.
Three seniors —
Mathieu Rajaonah,
Lucas Grego and
Justin Cvitanovic — were sent off with a bang as the Lopes won their seventh consecutive match.
"The guys had a great senior day," head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "They started off fast in doubles getting two quick wins in Court 1 and 3 and they never looked back in singles. They kept a high level of tennis all the way through the singles matches and the clinch. The guys never let Delaware in the match. They tried to give a good push in a number of the matches in the second sets, but our guys did a good job raising their level and getting off the courts in the clinch."
The Lopes (15-5) got off to a quick start in doubles, taking the points with wins at No. 1 and 3.
Freddie Grant and Grego finished first at No. 3 with a 6-0 shutout while
Lorenzo Fucile and Rajaonah won 6-1 at No. 1.
In singles, the Lopes jumped out to an early advantage taking five of the six first sets. Novak finished quickly at No. 6 with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win, his ninth win in a row. Fucile followed suit with a straight set win at No. 1, bringing the score to 3-0 and a point away from a clinch win.
The team win was clinched by Grant at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-1 win giving the Lopes the fourth point. As other matches stopped, Grego finished his final match at the GCU Tennis Facility winning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.
"It was nice to see Lucas get to finish off his last home on the GCU courts with a win," Prudhomme added. "And it was nice to see Raj get the doubles win on Court 1 and had a slight lead when they finished."
The Lopes will reignite an old rivalry when they head to Arizona State for the first match between the schools since 1987. The match will start Sunday in Tempe at 6 p.m.
