EL MACERO, Calif.  – The Grand Canyon men's golf team was one of six teams in the 15-team El Macero Classic field to fire an under-par round as the Lopes will enter Sunday's finale in seventh place.
GCU finished the day with a second-round score of 284 (4 under par) to lift the Lopes just five shots out of the top five.
Final second-round scores were junior
Jake Chanen with 71, junior
Michael Salazar with 71, sophomore
Trevor Lampson with 71, senior
Filip Lundell with 72 and freshman
Matthew Braley with 73. Salazar and Chanen led the Lopes with five birdies apiece during the round.
Overall, Lampson leads the Lopes individually in a tie for eighth place at even-par for the tournament. Chanen is in 22nd place, followed by Salazar in 28th.
No. 10 Texas Tech leads the tournament with a 573 (3 under par). Fullerton (575), Oregon State (576), UC Davis (578), Fresno State (580), San Francisco (581), GCU (585), No. 48 Nevada (587), Long Beach State (595) and No. 50 SMU (603) round out the top 10.
The individual lead is shared by Texas Tech's Sandy Scott and Ivan Ramirez at 3 under par each.
GCU is back in action for the final 18 holes of the El Macero Classic on Sunday at El Macero Country Club.
