EL MACERO, Calif.  – The Grand Canyon men's golf team finished the first round of the three-day El Macero Classic in seventh place Friday.
With a tournament scoring average over 76, the Lopes held their own as junior
Trevor Lampson led the way with a team-high five birdies and a round of 73 (1 over par). Junior
Jake Chanen carded a 75, while senior
Filip Lundell and junior
Michael Salazar finished with rounds of 76. Freshman
Matthew Braley added a 78.
Lampson's round places him in a tie for 13th-place entering Saturday's second round.
Tournament host UC Davis leads with a total of 290 (2 over par), followed by Oregon State (291), CSU Fullerton (297) and San Francisco (297).
The Lopes finished the day at 300 (12 over par) to finish the round three strokes off third place in the 15-team field.
Round 2 of the El Macero Classic will begin Saturday morning at El Macero Country Club.
