Lopes looks to defend 2018 title
The Grand Canyon men's tennis team will head to Sacramento State this weekend looking to defend their 2018 title from Golden State Invitational. The two-day, eight team tournament will begin on Friday and is co-hosted by Sacramento State and UC Davis.
Last year the Lopes won three matches in two days to win the invite for the first time. GCU defeated Nevada and UC Davis in tightly contested 4-3 matches, then beat UT Arlington 4-1 in the final. Lucas Grego went a perfect 3-0 in singles, and the Lopes won the doubles point in two of the three matches.
The Golden State Invite was the beginning of a strong end to last year's regular season. The invite title started a seven-match winning streak and the Lopes would finish out the season winning eight of their final ten matches overall.
Now in 2019, the Lopes will look to do the same with conference play beginning later this month. After a roadtrip to Hawaii and a home match against Liberty, the Lopes will head to Las Cruces for the first of two WAC clusters.
In this year's event GCU will face Fresno State in the first round on Friday. The Bulldogs (7-7) won the Mountain Pacific Invitational last weekend in Stockton, Calif. with wins over Hawaii and Pacific. GCU finished runner-up in the same event last season.
Win or loss the Lopes will face either Sacramento State or Hawaii in the second match, both teams already on the Lopes' schedule. GCU shutout Sacramento State 7-0 at home earlier this year on Jan. 27 and will face Hawaii later this month on March 16.
The last match will feature either UC Davis, Nevada, Saint Mary's, or a non-conference matchup with New Mexico State.
