PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – The Grand Canyon women's golf team finished the first day of the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational in seventh place on Thursday.
GCU is in the strong 12-team field with the likes of No. 10 Arizona, No. 35 Kennesaw State and No. 37 Tennessee.
Arizona is leading the three-day event with a first-round score of 286. Tennessee (287), Idaho (298), Kennesaw State (301), Fresno State (302) and Chattanooga (302) round out the top five and ties. GCU is next with a 305 total, besting Iowa and BYU.
Sophomore Siripatorn Patchana led the Lopes with an even-par score of 72. Junior
Carolina Sandstrom, playing as an individual fired a 73, followed by sophomore
Alexis Linam with a 74.
Other scores for the Lopes included freshman
Payton Fehringer at 77, junior
Courtney Vogel at 82 and freshman
Kaylee De Jonge at 82.
GCU is back in action Friday for the second round of the tournamen, which is hosted by Iowa.
