EDINBURG, Texas – The Grand Canyon women's basketball team suffered a 49-42 loss at Texas-Rio Grande Valley on Thursday night, when foul trouble followed GCU leading for most of the first three quarters.

Da'jah Daniel secured her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman guard
Taylor Caldwell contributed with five assists and two blocks. Senior power forward
AJ Cephas and Daniel also joined the block party, also accumulating two each.
GCU (5-14, 3-6 WAC) had trouble keeping possession of the ball in the first quarter, as the Lopes recorded seven turnovers. UTRGV (12-10, 6-3 WAC) shot 4 of 20 from the field in the first quarter, giving GCU a three-point lead after 10 minutes.
The Lopes managed to hang onto the lead at the halfway mark, 20-19, after scoring seven points in the quarter.
UTRGV took the lead in the third quarter for the first time since the first quarter. Freshman guard
Venla Varis came off the bench for the Lopes to tie the game with a 3-pointer, but UTRGV snuck its way into the lead, 32-31, after outscoring GCU by two points in the quarter.
The Vaqueros took advantage by hitting a 3-point shot to widen their lead to six. Varis stepped up to the plate and sank two three-pointers in the last minute of play but GCU's effort came up short.
The Lopes continue the road trip on Saturday, traveling to Las Cruces, N.M., to take on New Mexico State at 2 p.m. GCU won the teams' first meeting 54-51 on Jan. 10 in Phoenix.
