LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Grand Canyon women's basketball team could not repeat last month's defeat of New Mexico State, falling 81-52 to the Aggies on Saturday at the Pan American Center.
The Lopes (5-15, 3-7 WAC) were led in scoring by freshman forward
Carla Balague, who scored 12 points, while junior forward
Da'jah Daniel added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
GCU senior center
ShaRon Miller added 10 points and redshirt senior forward
AJ Cephas tallied eight rebounds and six points. Freshman point guard
Laura Piera scored nine points and dished a pair of assists.
The Lopes trailed 39-18 to the Aggies (17-6, 9-1 WAC) at halftime but Balague led GCU with six points and two rebounds while Daniel added a team-high four boards in the first 20 minutes.
The Lopes offense struggled in the first half, missing all seven of its 3-point tries and making 7 of 26 shots from the field.
GCU started a comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Aggies 20-16, but it wasn't enough as the Lopes suffered the road loss.
The Lopes return home to host Kansas City and Chicago State on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Admission to all GCU women's basketball games is free.
