After a lopsided road defeat at the hands of Kansas City last month, the Grand Canyon women's basketball team responded and remained competitive in a tight 65-56 loss to the Kangaroos at GCU Arena on Thursday night.
Lopes junior forward
Da'jah Daniel led all scorers with 23 points. Daniel was in double figures for the fifth time in the past six games after doing so just once in her first 13 games. The Killeen, Texas, native added seven rebounds and was 7 for 7 from the charity stripe.
GCU (5-16, 3-8 WAC) doubled up UMKC (12-11, 6-4 WAC) 20-10 in the first quarter. The Roos, however, responded with a 22-11 second quarter to take a slim lead into halftime.
Lopes senior guard
Kavita Akula hit a key 3-pointer at the 1:12 mark of the third quarter to pull GCU within a point, but UMKC responded with 10 straight points to close the third quarter. The Roos' lead would not dip below eight points the rest of the way.
The turnover bug bit GCU in a second half when it committed 10 as the Lopes struggled to break a UMKC full-court press. The Roos committed just two second-half turnovers.
The Lopes got off to a hot start, scoring eight of the game's first 10 points to jump out to an early advantage. Daniel heated up quickly, scoring six early points on back-to-back layups and a pair of free throws.
After UMKC narrowed the score to 8-7, the Lopes broke off their biggest run of the evening. GCU scored 13 consecutive points to reach the 20-point plateau at the opening quarter's 2:20 mark. The Lopes spread the wealth with five players contributing to the spurt.
The Lopes scored 20 points in a first quarter for the fourth time this season and the first time since a home win over California Baptist on Jan. 26.
The Roos had the lead in no time, however, thanks to a 15-4 run to begin the second quarter. GCU made just one field goal in the first seven minutes of the period. The Lopes closed the quarter strongly to trail by just one at the half.
Out of the locker room, UMKC built a seven-point lead before GCU responded with its own 7-0 run to re-tie the score. Akula's 3-pointer late in the third quarter was as close as GCU came with the Roos' strong finish to the third and start to the fourth sealing their win.
GCU is back on the home hardwood on Saturday at 2 p.m., when the Lopes look to avenge a January loss to Chicago State.
