Linnin, Occhipinti named Student-Athletes of Month

Grand Canyon student-athletes have their sights set on more than just winning on the competition field. With the help of the Academic and Student-Athlete Development staff, the Lopes are looking to provide leadership in the classroom and the community in addition to their roles on their respective teams.
Each month, GCULopes.com will feature two Lopes who are excelling in all three of these important phases of college life. Congratulations to the honorees for January 2018: Chris Linnin Jr. and Emilia Occhipinti.

| On the runway The senior has broken the school record in the high jump two weeks straight. Linnin's school record of 2.10 meters currently ranks first in the WAC. Linnin won WAC Field Athlete of the Week on January 22. |
On the court Occhipinti led the Lopes to a 2-2 record in the month of January. Occhipinti, at the top position in singles, clinched the match against Drake in the deciding third set in a tiebreaker. After losing the first set and seeing GCU's 3-1 lead vanish against the Bulldogs, Occhipinti forced a tiebreaker in what became a winner-take-all third set. After trailing 6-5 to face match point, the junior from Italy rallied to win the final three points, winning 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), and gave the Lopes a win in the home opener. Occhipinti was named the WAC Tennis Athlete of the Week for singles players for Jan. 15-21 and Jan. 22-28. |
