GCU, CBU meet Thursday night
The Grand Canyon women's basketball team plays just one team this week, as the Lopes head to Riverside, Calif., to face California Baptist on Thursday night.
GCU is coming off of a 35-point victory over Chicago State on Saturday for its largest victory margin of the season. Lopes junior Da'jah Daniel tallied her third double-double of the season in her sixth start. Senior center ShaRon Miller continues to lead GCU in scoring with 10.8 points per game, while redshirt senior AJ Cephas is in double-digits at 10.3 ppg after posting a 23-point game.Â
Scouting California Baptist
After downing California Baptist 75-71 at home to end of January, the Lopes look for the regular-season sweep of the Lancers to close out February on the road. Daniel went off for 24 points and 22 rebounds against the Lancers for a career day in the first meeting at GCU Arena. Three other Lopes were double-digit scorers, including Cephas (17 points), freshman guard Laura Piera (12 points) and freshman guard Taylor Caldwell (12 points).Â
The Lancers are 13-10 and 6-4 in WAC play. CBU is in its first season in the conference and starting the Division I transition, making the Lancers ineligible for postseason play. CBU has conference victories over Chicago State (twice), CSU Bakersfield, Utah Valley, Seattle U and Kansas City in double overtime.Â
The Lancers are paced offensively by Britney Thomas, who averages 16.3 points per contest. Ane Olaeta (11.5 ppg) and Delacy Brown (10.9 ppg) are also in double digits. Thomas is averaging a double-double with 11.0 rebounds per game, while teammate Lexy Ram sits at 5.4 rpg.Â
