RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Grand Canyon freshman point guard
Laura Piera tallied a team-high 13 points but the Lopes women's basketball team lost 93-50 at California Baptist on Thursday night at the CBU Events Center.
In the previous meeting, the Lopes downed California Baptist 75-71 in Phoenix at GCU Arena.
Piera added five rebounds and an assist to her resume on the night, while junior forward
Da'jah Daniel tallied a team-best 10 rebounds with five points.
Senior guard
Kavita Akula had nine points for GCU while the freshmen guard pair of
Taylor Caldwell and
Venla Varis each scored seven points.
Freshman forward
Carla Balague was active off the glass with seven boards.
The Lopes (6-17, 4-9 WAC) battled the Lancers (14-10, 7-4 WAC) for the first five minutes but GCU went on a scoring drought and CBU used a 17-0 run to lead 28-7 in the middle of the second quarter.
GCU trailed 45-18 at halftime, as the Lopes were led by six points from Piera and five boards from Daniel in the half.
The Lopes could not cut the Lancers lead in the second half, as CBU charged forward for the 93-50 final in Riverside. GCU's offense struggled as the Lopes shot 31.7 percent (20-63) from the field and 19 percent (4-21) from beyond the arc.
GCU continues on the road at CSU Bakersfield on March 2.
