GCU plays at CSU Bakersifeld on Saturday
The Grand Canyon women's basketball team takes to the road one final time in the regular season, as the Lopes are searching to start the month of March on a high note with a win at CSU Bakersfield (11-15, 7-6 WAC).
GCU (6-17, 4-9 WAC)Â is coming off of a 93-50 loss at California Baptist after downing Chicago State at home, 84-49. GCU sits in eighth in the WAC and is looking at earning a seventh-place seed heading into the WAC Tournament in Las Vegas, following its final two regular-season contests on March 7 and 9.Â
Scouting CSU Bakersfield
In the month of January, the Roadrunners were 3-3 in WAC play. CSU Bakersfield beat GCU 59-46 in Phoenix to start the month. The Roadrunners went on to lose to New Mexico State and Texas-Rio Grande Valley in back-to-back games on the road before beating Chicago State and Kansas City at home.Â
Most recently, the Roadrunners traveled to Riverside, Calif., to face California Baptist and lost 67-43. CSUB is paced offensively by Alexxus Gilbert, who averages 16.8 points per game. Gilbert is followed by Malayasia McHenry at 10.4 points per contest. On defense, McHenry leads the 'Runners with 6.3 boards per game while Miracle Saxon is second with 5.4 rebounds per game.Â
GCU looks to beat CSUB on the road for the season split. Last year, the Lopes fell 69-40 to the 'Runners in Phoenix and then beat them on the road in double overtime, 77-76, to end the regular season. The pair met again in the second round of the WAC Tournament, as GCU fell to the second-seeded Roadrunners, 61-55.
