RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Grand Canyon women's golf team captured the Battle at the Rock tournament title with an incredible comeback during the final holes on Tuesday.
GCU trailed by 11 shots after the first round Monday and by seven shots entering the third and final round Tuesday. The Lopes trailed on the final three holes but junior
Courtney Vogel birdied two of her last three holes, junior
Carolina Sandstrom birdied her last two holes and freshman Kaylee DeJonge birdied two of her final three to complete the comeback.

Lauren Giesecke said. "Each player contributed and stepped up in a major way. The heart and determination this team showed made me speechless. We started the tournament at the bottom but didn't let it faze us and continued to battle back to the top. I am beyond proud of this group and the resiliency they all showed. This is a great start to our spring and only the beginning."
GCU won by one shot with an 881 total that jumped the Lopes ahead of second-place Cal Poly (882) and third-place Santa Clara (883).
Vogel led GCU with a third-place individual finish, including a final-round 69 (3-under). Vogel finished with a 217 total (1-over). Sandstrom took 10
th place after leading for most of the first round, when she shot a 70. She finished with a 219 (3-over).
Freshman
Payton Fehringer finished in 21
st, including a collegiate low of 71 in her second round. Sophomore
Alexis Linam finished in 36
th with a pair of 74s. DeJonge finished in 51
st but recorded a key final round of 71 to help the Lopes rally.
The Lopes are back in action next week when it hosts the GCU Invitational at GCU Golf Course on Feb. 23-24.
