RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Grand Canyon women's golf team completed the first day at the Battle at the Rock tournament in fourth place Monday.
The day began with a two-hour frost delay, leaving most players to conclude about 27 holes, nine holes shy of what had been schedeuled.
Powered by a strong first round by junior
Carolina Sandstrom, the Lopes moved up from ninth place after one round to fourth place midway through round two.
Sandstrom led for most of the first round before finishing the first 18 holes in second place with a 2-under-par round of 70. Other GCU first-round scores included freshman
Payton Fehringer's 77, junior
Courtney Vogel's 77, sophomore
Alexis Linam's 78 and freshman Kaylee DeJonge's 80.
With darkness arriving at 5:45 p.m. Monday in Riverside, play was suspended until Tuesday morning. The Lopes moved to fourth place at 15-over, seven shots behind leader Cal Poly.
In-progress, second-round scores include Fehringer at 2-under, Vogel and Linam at even, Sandstrom at 3-over and DeJonge 5-over.
Second-round action will conclude Tuesday morning, followed immediately by the final 18 holes at Oak Quarry Golf Club.
