The Grand Canyon women's soccer team will be back at home when it faces CSU Bakersfield at 7 p.m. Saturday with WAC Tournament seeding on the line.
GCU already clinched a WAC Tournament berth, for the third consecutive year, but the seeding can still change. With a GCU win, the Lopes could be seeded as high as No. 4 if Kansas City and UT Rio Grande Valley lose. If GCU loses, CSU Bakersfield clinched a tournament spot and the Lopes would be the No. 6 seed.Â
A loss by CSU Bakersfield and a win by New Mexico State would see the Aggies leapfrog the Roadrunners into the final tournament spot.
Sunday's game can be watched on the GCUTV.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- HAT TRICK: Redshirt freshman forward Dani Babb recorded a hat trick in a 5-0 win at home against Chicago State, the first since Deseree Doty scored five goals against Chicago State in 2015. Forward Camryn Larson added the two other goals in the Lopes' win.
Â
- OCTOBER SUCCESS: Entering October, GCU wrapped up a tough nonconference schedule with a 1-8-1 record and four goals scored. In October, the Lopes flipped the script starting with a 2-1 win at New Mexico State. Followed up with a 2-0 win over perennial WAC favorite Kansas City a week later and a 5-0 win against Chicago State, the Lopes clinched their third straight WAC Tournament appearance.
Â
- TOURNAMENT LOOMING: With their ticket officially punched to Seattle for the WAC Tournament, the Lopes soon will turn their attention to a first-round matchup that will be determined after facing the Roadrunners. GCU owns a 1-2 record in the WAC Tournament and was eliminated by Utah Valley the past two seasons. GCU's lone win came in its first-ever WAC postseason match when it pulled off a 2-1 upset over No. 3 seed UTRGV in 2017 at GCU Stadium.
SCOUTING
CSU Bakersfield owns a 3-3-1 record on the road but has yet to win a road game during WAC play. The Roadrunners have lost to Seattle U, New Mexico State and UTRGV.
With a win at GCU, the Roadrunners would clinch the final spot in the WAC Tournament. With a loss, the Roadrunners would need a loss to New Mexico State to clinch a spot in the tournament. A tie and NMSU loss would also clinch a postseason berth.
Four players have scored four goals for CSUB. Junior forward Eszter Toth leads the Roadrunners with four goals and 12 points on 24 shots. Senior forward Aryana Harvey has recorded a team-high six assists, which ranks second in the WAC.Â
Goalkeeper Andrea Neves has allowed 25 goals with 61 saves in 17 starts with a .709 save percentage.Â
LAST TIME OUT
- The Lopes defeated Chicago State 5-0 and lost to Utah Valley 1-0.
- Redshirt freshman forward Dani Babb scored the first GCU hat trick since Deseree Doty scored five goals in 2015.
- The Lopes recorded 32Â shots against Chicago State for a season high.
WHAT'S NEXT
- The Lopes will head to Seattle U for the WAC Tournament, beginning on Nov. 6.
