OREM, Utah — The Grand Canyon women's soccer team fell 1-0 at Utah Valley 1-0 on Saturday.
On a cold night with the wind dropping the temperature into the mid-40s, the Lopes (4-12-1, 3-4-0) came out hot defensively in the first half to limit Utah Valley (10-7-1, 5-2-0) to just two shots. The Lopes took three shots in the first half, including one from redshirt freshman forward
Jaycee Iranshad that went over the crossbar in the third minute.
Utah Valley broke through with a goal by Amber Tripp in the 48th minute. Tripp scored the goal after her teammate Madeline Moore took a shot that deflected off the left post. Tripp then broke through the GCU back line and was able to shoot the rebounding ball into the right side of the goal.
The Wolverines came out strong in the second half, tallying 12 shots while maintaining control of the ball for long stretches. The Lopes were able to create chances, tallying five shots but only one was on goal.
Iranshad paced the GCU offense with four shots while junior defender
Hannah Edwards and sophomore forward
Remmi Deutsch combined to take the other four shots. Lopes freshman goalkeeper
Lauren Garthwaite made five more saves and now sits at 88 on the season.
With the loss in their regular-season road finale, the Lopes remain at nine points in the WAC standings and will close the regular season against CSU Bakersfield next week at GCU Stadium. The Roadrunners will host Chicago State, whom the Lopes defeated 5-0 on Thursday, before traveling to Phoenix on Nov. 2.
